Important Information

How it works

How it works

How it works

  • Stagehands are hired through a "Hiring Hall' operated by the union.

  • It is not necessary to be a member of Local #93, the Stagehand's Union, to get work on events here in Spokane.

  • You should read and understand the Hiring Hall rules before showing up to work. (See Below)

  • The Call Steward will contact you for a work call either by phone or text message.

  • We use "CallSteward.com" to send and confirm offers for specific work times and places. There are some helpful videos on our Training page.

  • Note that our Call Steward is a person, the software is also called Call Steward, and there is a Job Steward on every call. The terminology can be confusing.

Paycheck

How it works

How it works

  • You will be paid weekly. Pay periods run Monday-Sunday. On Thursday you will receive an email with your paystub. Money for that pay stub will be deposited on Friday.

  • The Hiring Hall payroll is done by UTP Group, Inc. (UTP); they issue your checks and are considered your legal "Employer of Record" for Unemployment and State Industrial reports.

  • A 4% Work Assessment is deducted from your check to help fund the operations of Local 93 and the management of the Hiring Hall.

  • Paycheck related concerns can be directed to:
    • UTP Productions, Inc
    • PO Box 3778

Hours

How it works

Behavior

  • You will be paid for a minimum of 4 hours for any given shift or "call"

  • Generally, you will be called for a "LOAD IN" and a "LOAD OUT" often on the same day. Your first calls may be for an OUT only.

  • Each call, has a 4-hour minimum. Your call will list the expected hours, but may run longer. You are expected to stay until officially released by the Job Steward.

  • Let the Call Steward know in advance if you have a time conflict. Please don't schedule anything immediately after a call. (stuff happens!)

  • Our contracts include breaks as well as many other specifics negotiated by the union.

  • Overtime is paid after 8 hours of work in one day or hours worked after midnight.

  • Questions about the time you worked and your pay rate should go to the Job Steward, preferably before you leave.

  • There is a detailed description of what to expect on your first call.

Typical First Day

Behavior

Behavior

Behavior

Maintain a professional demeanor; this is a customer service position as much as it is skilled labor.

  • Follow your lead’s instructions,
  •  If you are not sure about a task or term - ask!
  • “Standby” means to stay nearby with your crew where your lead can easily find you. (no drifting)
  • Do not sit on scenery, props or a tech’s chair.
  • Phones must remain silent and used only on break.
  • NO PICTURES!

Clothing

Behavior

Clothing

You will get dirty and come up against hard and/or sharp edges. You may be cool in the morning and hot later on.

  • Tough and protective clothing is best. Sleeves are required. No foul writing or images.
  • Gloves can be nice and are preferred by most.
  • Steel toed shoes are not required but are very popular. Sturdy shoes are a must.
  • Hard Hats are provided and encouraged. If you have your own you may bring it.

Safety

Behavior

Work as a team : slower is safer

(work efficiently - do not rush)

  • Actively listen and observe your surroundings, including above your head - Listen!
  • Stay clear of moving equipment such as flying truss / batten, forklift, or working platform.
  • Take extra care not to run over toes, heals or pinch fingers when handling road cases, especially on ramps
  • If something seems unsafe, check with a Union member or the job steward before proceeding. Report all incidents or hazards immediately.

Security

The IN is all about the OUT!

Basic Tools

Security requirements varies widely depending on the venue and even the artist. Please be patient and follow instructions as best you can.

  • Security staff often don't understand what we do, just as we don't know their orders. Conflicting instructions are not rare.

  • Security may need to inspect your tools. If they have a problem with knives or other items please reconsider if they are necessary and/or contact the steward. (Guns are not allowed by most venues. Please do not bring ANY weapons.)

  • The Spokane PFD issues ID badges to IATSE 93 members. Non-members should be on a list given to security that day.

If you have a problem with Security or anyone else on site, contact the job steward or the call steward.

The IN is all about the OUT!

This means that we always prioritize how things come apart and pack up.

  • Pay attention to how equipment arrives – it will leave the same way and it all has to be organized and ready for the next show.

  • Tie knots that are simple to untie (like shoelace bows.) We often use a clove hitch and the bowline. Please review those knots before arriving at work.

  • Run cables in paths that are easy to pull up. Don't cross or overlap them if at all possible.

  • Be aware that some tape is meant to be left permanently as labels for the road crew, or to loom several cables together. Don't break tape unless you are sure it is temporary.

  • Leave "courtesy tabs" on temporary tape.
